Registration in the Trade Register

The trade register is often voluntary for business names.

What is the Trade Register?

The Trade Register is a publicly available list maintained by the Finnish Patent and Registration Office (PRH). It can be used to check information about registered companies.

Do I need to register with the Trade Register?

Not usually, if you are sole entrepreneur (private trader) and operate alone without special permits. You can start your business with just a business ID number without this registration if it is not mandatory in your case.

When is registration mandatory?

Registration is mandatory for sole proprietors only if:

  • You hire external workers.
    • Note: Family members are not counted as outsiders.
  • You need a special permit for this activity.
    • For example, certain healthcare, construction, or restaurant services.
  • You have a permanent workspace outside your home.
    • For example, a separate office or store.

Why would I join voluntarily?

Even if registration is not mandatory, many companies register to protect their name:

  • Name protection: Only the name entered in the Trade Register (e.g., "Matin Maalaus") has exclusive rights. No one else may use the same name.
  • Without registration: The official name of your company is just your own name (e.g., "Meikäläinen Matti").

Cost and procedures for joining

Price: €70 (one-time payment) when you register online

Notification: Submit the notification yourself on the YTJ.fi service.

Accounting: Remember to add the €70 payment receipt to your accounting records.

⚠️ Important: When ending business operations

If you cease your business activities, you must also separately deregister from the Trade Register. Active registration obliges you to file a tax return for your business activities, even if the business has otherwise already ceased.
