YEL insurance
Information on pension coverage and insurance requirements for light entrepreneurs
Yes, it is statutory insurance if the following conditions are met:
- You are between the ages of 18 and 68 (the upper age limit for mandatory insurance is being raised in stages).
- Your employment will last for at least 4 consecutive months.
- Your estimated income from work exceeds the minimum threshold (9 423.09€ in 2026).
- You live and work in Finland. You must take out insurance no later than 6 months after starting your business.
YEL (Entrepreneur's Pension) is the cornerstone of an entrepreneur's social security. It is not just a "pension contribution"; it directly affects the following benefits:
- Sickness allowance: The benefit paid by Kela is determined based on income under the YEL scheme.
- Parental Benefits: Maternity, paternity, and parental benefits are calculated based on earned income.
- Unemployment Insurance: Eligibility for unemployment benefits for self-employed individuals requires a certain level of income under the Self-Employed Persons' Pensions Act (YEL).
- Pension coverage: Accumulates old-age pension benefits and provides protection in the event of disability.
The YEL income limit for 2026 is €9,423.09
YEL earned incomerefers to the value of the work you perform as an entrepreneur, expressed in euros, over a 12-month period. It is therefore not the same as your revenue or the salary you pay yourself, but rather a monetary estimate of what you would pay an outside professional to do the work you perform. The YEL insurance company’s recommended earned income is based on your estimated turnover and the median salary in your industry. The assessment also takes into account any part-time work and seasonality. The YEL earned income limit changes annually.
