Who needs to take out YEL insurance?

When should a light entrepreneur take out YEL insurance? Check whether you meet the conditions: age, duration of employment, and annual income of over €9,400.

Many people are surprised to learn that even light entrepreneurs may be subject to YEL. Entrepreneur's pension insurance (YEL) is statutory, i.e., mandatory, when certain conditions are met.

You must take out YEL insurance if all of the following conditions are met

  • You are between 18 and 6 8 years old*
  • You have been a light entrepreneur for at least 4 consecutive months.
  • Your work income (estimated value of your work input) exceeds €9,423.09 per year (2026 limit).
  • You live in Finland

* The insurance obligation ends at the latest at the end of the calendar month in which:

  • Those born in 1957 or earlier will turn 68 
  • People born between 1958 and 1961 will turn 69 
  • Those born in 1962 or later will turn 70
