Am I considered an employee or an entrepreneur?

Are you an employee or an entrepreneur? The status of a light entrepreneur varies between different authorities. Read how the tax authorities, pension companies, and Kela interpret your status.

This is an important issue in terms of social security. Although "light entrepreneur" is not an official legal term, different authorities interpret your status slightly differently.

  • Tax authority: You are an employee. You receive a salary and pay taxes using a tax card.
  • Pension system (YEL): You are an entrepreneur. If your income exceeds the limit, you must take out YEL insurance.
  • Unemployment security (TE Office/Kela): You are generally considered an entrepreneur, but there are exceptions to unemployment security (e.g., a 4-month trial period or part-time work).
