Tax deductions & tax return for light entrepreneurs

Did you know that as a light entrepreneur you are entitled to several tax deductions in your personal tax return? In this blog post, we've put together some advice on tax deductions that will help you make money! 💸

The last dates for filing your tax return are 7.5., 14.5. or 21.5.2024. You can find the due date for your tax return in MyTax or on the pre-completed tax return mailed to your home. If there is nothing to correct on your tax return, you don't need to do anything!

In principle, you can deduct the following expenses as income-generating expenditure:

  • Travel expenses*
  • Material costs
  • YEL contributions

Service charge and health insurance contribution

According to the decision of the Supreme Administrative Court (KHO:2023:42), the service charge for light entrepreneur services and the employer's health insurance contribution should not be considered part of the gross salary, but deducted directly from the invoice amount.

The change will reduce the tax burden on the light entrepreneur, as taxes will be paid on a lower gross wage.

As a light entrepreneur, you no longer need to make a separate deduction for service fees and health insurance contributions, as these are already deducted from your pay slip.

YEL insurance

YEL insurance contributions are also fully deductible as income-generating expenses, so it is also worth deducting them in your personal tax return.

*Exceptional travel expenses (not reported on personal tax return)

Travel expenses that you have invoiced to your client are, in principle, paid to you as tax-free reimbursements. Travel expenses already paid to you as tax-free reimbursements should not be declared on your personal tax return. You will receive the full tax benefit of the tax-free allowances when you receive your salary.

Taxable reimbursement of travel expenses

Travel expenses paid to you in any way other than as tax-free travel expenses are taxable income. You can claim a deduction for such travel expenses in your personal tax return.

Tools and accessories

Expenses that cannot be deducted from your salary can be claimed as a deduction on your personal tax return. Such work-related expenses may include telephone, computer, work clothes and tools and related maintenance and repair costs.

Workroom allowance

If you have worked a lot from home, you can claim a deduction on your tax return. If more than half of the total number of working days were spent working from home, the value of the deduction is €940. You can also claim a deduction for furniture and equipment related to the workroom.

Education and training expenditure

It is possible to claim a tax deduction for study and training expenses related to work, such as attendance fees and course fees. The expenses must be paid personally and must be accompanied by an explanation of how they relate to your work.

The advice collected in this blog post is provided for your convenience without any obligation. However, please note that individual tax decisions are always made by the Tax Administration.‍
